Cartel Threads founder Joey Dee started screen printing t-shirts in high school. A neighbor and fellow in his town church ran a small printing shop from his garage and taught Joey the art. Through the years, Joey earned his education and held his career but always kept a small hand in screen printing and graphic designing for shirts. Since 1987, Joey has printed more than 300,000 shirts and apparel pieces for schools, sports, small business owners and churches around the country. When he was located in New England, he had a group of friends who worked with him to create wonderful shirts for fellowships and they called themselves the Tee Shirt Cartel. The name was fun and just stuck.

With the advent of the Internet and online sales, it’s become easy for consumers to buy shirts that are fun to wear, but Joey found things about Christian shirt websites that just didn’t fit with the mission of spreading the word of God. Some of the printers are grasping at fast dollars with politically motivated prints, snark and sarcasm and subject matter than doesn’t belong in a spiritually inspired shop. Christ doesn’t bow to the American flag, or the current President and surely he doesn’t make jest with scripture. Shirts and gifts that boast that lifestyle just won’t be found here.

Cartel Threads from Joey Dee, the last remaining member of the Tee Shirt Cartel of New England in the 1990s, is an extension of Joey’s faith and hope to help others connect through their celebration in finding God. T-shirts and apparel can be like billboards – they catch the eye and deliver a message, and when it’s a shared message of spirituality and joy, conversations can start, friendships can be made and Christ can shared.
